The above photograph appeared on the front page of the February 11, 2010
edition of The West Essex Tribune in Livingston, NJ. February 8th is the birth
date of Robert Baden-Powell who founded the Scouting movement, and is
traditionally celebrated as the date of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.

The photograph was taken of the crowed at random and what the photographer
was unaware of was several otherwise interesting and noteworthy aspects of
the photo.

Aidan (on the right) is a First Class Boy Scout which is the rank that the BSA
uses as the "goal" or level of desired achievement in the program. He is lighting
the candle of WEBELOS Cub Scout Sean S. who in a few weeks time will
be bridging over from the Cub Scout Pack to the Boy Scout Troop. The theme of
"Lighting a candle to light our way forward" is clearly visible in the photo and
includes both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
The Orange Mountains District patch was re-designed by my father in 2007. It served the district for about four years. In 2011, the Northern New Jersey Council merged the 9 Districts that made up the Council into 3 Districts and the Orange Mountains District was renamed the Lenape Trail District which was comprised of a merger with Broken Arrow District and Robert Treat District. As a
whole these formerly independent districts make up Essex County.

The 'Lenape Trail' is an actual hiking trail which links all of the county parks in Essex County and is 70% parkland, and 30% urban or street trail which again is something of an unique feature.

For the short time this patch was in use by Orange Mountains, it became a widely recognized commodity and was known to have been included in several Boy Scout media presentations which is the mark of a really unique item. There were a limited number of these patches produced and none have ever been offered for sale
by those who posess them.
